LOO WEE SING CASPIAN MICHAEL

wHY THE NOC singapore PROGRAMME?

I am Michael, a 24-year-old student at NUS, double majoring in Computer Science and Statistics. My passion lies in using technology and data to innovate and solve real-world problems. Despite previous involvement in entrepreneurship and completing an industry attachment, I still sought clarity on my career direction and had questions about the startup funding process. This led me to join the NOC Singapore programme. It promised a unique opportunity to dive deep into the startup ecosystem, combining practical experience with academic learning. I saw it as a chance to gain firsthand insights into the challenges and opportunities of starting a business, which aligned perfectly with my interests and academic background. Joining NOC was a strategic move to explore the intricacies of entrepreneurship and to evaluate my potential in this field, all while being supported by the resources and network provided by NUS Enterprise.

how was the process before the programme?

Embarking on the NOC Singapore programme, I first tackled the task of CV preparation, using a template provided by NOC. This step was crucial for me to present my skills and experiences effectively to potential startups.

The interview process was an adventure in itself, typically involving 1-2 rounds where I had to showcase not just my technical skills, but also my adaptability and enthusiasm for the startup environment. There was no guarantee of securing an internship, adding a layer of challenge

and urgency to each interview. I felt a mix of

excitement and nervousness, knowing that these

interviews were not just about landing a role,

but about finding a match where I could contribute

significantly and grow. My journey through CV

preparation to the final interview was a blend of

self-discovery and strategic planning,

ultimately leading me to an offer from StaffAny,

where I felt my journey could truly begin.

what did you do on the programme?

During my time in the NOC Singapore programme, my weekdays were a dynamic blend of work and learning. Each day began early, around 8 AM, and stretched until 6 PM, immersing me in the fast-paced environment of StaffAny. My role as a Business Growth Intern was both challenging and exhilarating, filled with tasks ranging from streamlining business development operations to supporting sales calls. This role tested my ability to adapt and learn on the fly, pushing me to apply my technical background in innovative ways.

Weekends, on the other hand, offered a much-needed respite and a chance to explore interests outside work. They were not entirely devoid of responsibilities, occasionally attending to client calls or being on customer support duty. However, these weekends also allowed me to dive into the startup ecosystem further by participating in events like Data Conventions for Start-ups and Web 3 Seminars. These events were not just educational; they were networking goldmines, offering insights into the latest trends and challenges in the entrepreneurial world. This balance of work, learning, and exploration defined my experience in the NOC programme, making every day a step towards personal and professional growth.

How were classes like?

In the NOC programme, I'm enrolled in four unique modules, each offering a different perspective on entrepreneurship and resilience. ETP2271, "Discovering Resilience and Purpose," has been particularly impactful, focusing on personal development and providing a refreshing break from the technical rigor of my major.

It's the weekly check-ins and reflective exercises that I find most enjoyable, as they offer moments of introspection amidst a bustling schedule.

TR3202, the "Start-Up Internship Programme," aligns closely with my internship, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, which I find incredibly rewarding.

TR3203, "Start-Up Case Analysis," challenges me to think critically about business processes and strategies, encouraging me to apply my technical skills in a sales context. This module has sparked a particular interest in me, leading me to work on solutions proposed in class as part of my Final Year Project.

Lastly, TR3204T, the "Entrepreneurship Practicum," has been a test of creativity and innovation, requiring me to pitch business ideas, which has significantly honed my presentation and persuasion skills.

Overall, these courses have enriched my

understanding of entrepreneurship,

blending theoretical learning with practical application

in ways that I thoroughly enjoy.

Through my internship and the diverse modules I've taken, I've learned that starting a business requires a deep commitment to continuous learning and growth. The hands-on experience at StaffAny, coupled with the academic rigor of courses like TR3203 "Start-Up Case Analysis," highlighted the importance of being able to pivot strategies based on market feedback and data insights.

This journey has taught me that success in entrepreneurship comes from the ability to weather the ups and downs with a resilient mindset. It's not just the successes but the setbacks that shape a robust entrepreneurial journey. This realization has shifted my perspective from seeking immediate results to embracing a long-term view of building sustainable value.
